THE HORNET’S NEST

“Aunt Sandy, you have a huge nest of some kind right outside your laundry room window!” My nephew had been cleaning my windows and saw it when he tried to clean that particular window.  Immediately I went outside to see it. I thought it was huge, but it was actually kind of pretty.  It was shiny silver with beautiful designs.  But I also saw the hornets swarming around it, going in and out of it, continuing to add on to what was already there.  We checked it out and discovered that indeed it was a hornet’s nest.  There was no way we wanted to tackle the job ourselves so decided to call the professionals, which was a good thing because they said there could have been thousands of hornets in it.

After they removed it and killed the hornets, I continued to watch that area and still saw hornets flying around.  About a week later I saw hornets in the corner of the window, and it looked like they were starting to build a new nest in the corner with their webbing.  I called the exterminator back and he came out and sprayed again.  He told my husband that corner was one place he had not sprayed.  It was not guarded!!

Surely there is a spiritual application to this story!  When we start on our salvation journey, we repent, cleanse our hearts of all filthiness of the flesh and allow God to fill it with His presence.  We discover though that it’s a job we must continually work on because life has so many twists and turns that it can be difficult to keep our hearts pure and clean, focused on Jesus.  That’s why prayer and reading the Bible is so important.  Paul admonishes Timothy to “Guard your heart most carefully.” (II Timothy 6:20 Phillips translation.)  Just as those hornets started to build another nest, Satan will do everything he can to keep us distracted from our purpose in Christ and try to fill our lives and hearts with things of this world.  We must be aware of this and keep guarding our heart.  Prov. 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Our prayer needs to be “Search me O God and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts; see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.”  Guard your heart by keeping your eyes on Jesus, and don’t let those “hornets” start building a new nest!
